Why We Love Viscose Made From Bamboo for Sleepwear

Why We Love Viscose Made From Bamboo for Sleepwear

Soft, lightweight and made for slowing down: a closer look at the fabric behind Toozi

There are plenty of reasons to care about what you wear to bed. After all, sleepwear spends hours against your skin, and feeling comfortable can make all the difference when it’s finally time to wind down.

At Toozi, fabric has always been at the center of the experience. We chose viscose made from bamboo for its incredibly soft feel, fluid drape and lightweight comfort — the qualities that make slipping into pajamas at the end of the day feel like a ritual of its own.

There are also a lot of claims floating around about “bamboo fabric,” from miracle cooling abilities to antibacterial powers and sweeping environmental promises. We prefer to keep things simple, transparent and grounded in what we can actually stand behind.

Here’s what to know.

First, What Is “Bamboo” Sleepwear?

The soft, smooth fabric commonly described as bamboo sleepwear is generally viscose or rayon made using cellulose sourced from bamboo.

That distinction matters.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, a textile can only be called bamboo if it is made directly from actual bamboo fiber. When bamboo is used as the plant source for rayon or viscose, the finished textile should instead be described as “rayon made from bamboo” or “viscose made from bamboo.”

So when we talk about the fabric used in Toozi sleepwear, we use the more accurate description: viscose made from bamboo.

Why We Chose It for Toozi

1. The Feel

This is the biggest reason — and the one you notice immediately.

Viscose made from bamboo can be made into an exceptionally soft, smooth fabric with a beautiful fluid drape. For sleepwear, that translates into pieces that feel easy and comfortable against the body rather than stiff or overly structured.

At Toozi, that softness is a huge part of what makes getting dressed for bed feel a little more luxurious.

We call it the Toozi Touch.

2. Lightweight Comfort

When you're trying to get comfortable at night, heavy or restrictive clothing isn't exactly inviting.

Research suggests that sleepwear and bedding can influence the thermal environment around the body, and factors including fiber type, fabric thickness, construction, insulation and water-vapor resistance can all play a role in thermal comfort.

There is not, however, one scientifically proven “best” sleepwear fiber for every person or every sleeping environment.

That’s why at Toozi, we focus less on dramatic cooling promises and more on what you can actually feel: lightweight fabric, comfortable silhouettes and styles designed to move easily with you.

3. A Soft, Fluid Drape

Comfort doesn't have to mean sacrificing style.

One of the things we love most about viscose made from bamboo is the way it drapes. It allows us to create sleepwear that feels relaxed without looking sloppy — pieces you can wear to bed, through a slow Sunday morning, while making coffee or while lounging at home without immediately wanting to change.

It's that balance of ease and polish that Toozi was created around.

4. Stretch Where It Matters

Many of our sleepwear styles combine viscose made from bamboo with a small amount of stretch fiber.

That extra stretch gives the fabric flexibility for sleeping, lounging and moving throughout the day while helping our silhouettes maintain the fit and feel we designed them to have.

And when you're shopping for sleepwear, fabric composition is only one piece of the puzzle. Fabric weight, knit construction, stretch, seams, waistbands and overall garment design can all influence how comfortable something actually feels.

What About Sleeping Hot?

If you're a hot sleeper, you already know that getting comfortable can sometimes feel like a nightly negotiation.

Your overall sleep environment matters. Research has found that thermal conditions can influence sleep, while sleepwear and bedding contribute to the microclimate surrounding the body.

That doesn't mean a particular pair of pajamas can promise to lower your body temperature by a certain number of degrees, stop night sweats or guarantee deeper sleep.

Instead, we think it makes more sense to look for sleepwear that feels comfortable for you.

For warm nights, that may mean:

  • Lightweight fabrics
  • Relaxed silhouettes
  • Short sleeves or sleeveless styles
  • Shorts or chemises instead of pants
  • Clothing that gives you enough room to move comfortably

For summer, some of our favorite Toozi options are our short-sleeve tees, shorts, camisoles and chemises.

Is Viscose Made From Bamboo Naturally Antibacterial?

This is one of the most common claims made about bamboo-based textiles — and one we intentionally don't repeat.

While the bamboo plant itself has certain natural properties, the FTC notes that there is no evidence that rayon made from processed bamboo automatically retains the plant's natural antibacterial qualities after being manufactured into fabric.

So unless a specific finished textile has undergone appropriate testing supporting an antibacterial claim, we don't describe Toozi sleepwear that way.

Soft and comfortable? Absolutely.

A medical or antibacterial product? That's not what we're claiming it to be.

What About Sensitive Skin?

For many people, soft, smooth clothing simply feels better against the skin.

But everyone's skin is different, so we don't claim that viscose made from bamboo treats eczema, repairs the skin barrier or is universally hypoallergenic.

Organizations such as the National Eczema Association generally encourage people with eczema to pay attention to clothing that is soft, breathable and non-irritating, while avoiding materials or garment features that personally trigger irritation.

If you have eczema or another skin condition, your healthcare provider can help you determine what works best for your individual skin.

Is Viscose Made From Bamboo Sustainable?

This is another area where we think transparency is more valuable than buzzwords.

Bamboo itself is a plant source used to make certain viscose and rayon textiles. But growing bamboo and turning bamboo cellulose into soft viscose fabric are two very different parts of the process.

The FTC cautions brands against assuming that rayon or viscose made from bamboo is automatically environmentally superior simply because bamboo was used as the original plant source. Environmental claims should be supported by evidence relating to the actual sourcing and manufacturing process.

That's why we don't think phrases like “completely biodegradable,” “chemical-free,” “uses no pesticides” or “eco-friendly” should be thrown around without specific evidence behind them.

For Toozi, we'd rather tell you exactly what our sleepwear is made from and why we chose it than turn sustainability into a marketing promise we can't substantiate.

How to Care for Viscose Made From Bamboo Sleepwear

The easiest way to keep your favorite sleepwear looking and feeling its best is to follow the care instructions on the garment.

Gentle laundering can help preserve the softness, shape and feel of delicate knit fabrics over time.

Always refer to the care label on your specific Toozi piece, especially since instructions can vary depending on the style and fabric blend.

And one important note: while you may see claims online that viscose made from bamboo is naturally wrinkle-proof, shrink-proof or incapable of pilling, those aren't promises we make. Like any soft textile, its long-term appearance depends on the construction of the garment, how frequently it's worn and how it's cared for.

Building a Sleepwear Wardrobe You Actually Want to Wear

The best sleepwear wardrobe isn't necessarily the biggest one.

It's the one you actually reach for.

For warmer nights, think shorts, camisoles, chemises and lightweight tees. When temperatures drop, add pants, long sleeves and an easy layer.

And while fabric matters, so do all the little details:

A waistband that doesn't dig in.
A silhouette that gives you room to move.
Soft fabric against your skin.
Thoughtful seams.
A fit that works whether you're sleeping, sitting on the couch or having coffee the next morning.

That combination is what Toozi is really about.

The Toozi Take

We don't think pajamas need miracle claims to be worth getting excited about.

We chose viscose made from bamboo because we love the way it feels — soft, smooth, lightweight and beautifully draped.

Then we design around that feeling, creating sleepwear meant for restful nights, slow mornings and everything in between.

Because sometimes luxury is simply feeling really, really comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is viscose made from bamboo better than cotton for sleep?

There isn't enough scientific evidence to say that one fiber is universally better for sleep.

Thermal comfort can depend on fiber type, fabric construction, thickness, bedding, room temperature and the individual sleeper. A 2024 systematic review of sleepwear and bedding research found that fiber type can influence thermal comfort and sleep outcomes, but results vary depending on the conditions and population studied.

For many shoppers, the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. We chose viscose made from bamboo because we love its softness, fluid drape and lightweight feel.

Is viscose made from bamboo good for sensitive skin?

Soft, smooth clothing may feel more comfortable for some people with sensitive skin, but we don't claim that viscose made from bamboo treats eczema or is inherently hypoallergenic.

If you have eczema or another skin condition, look for clothing that feels soft and non-irritating to your skin and follow the recommendations of your healthcare provider.

Does viscose made from bamboo help with night sweats?

Lightweight sleepwear may help some people feel more comfortable when they sleep warm, but Toozi sleepwear is not intended to prevent or treat night sweats.

Sleepwear is also only one part of your overall sleep environment. Room temperature, humidity, bedding and individual physiology can all influence thermal comfort during sleep.

If you're experiencing frequent, severe or unexplained night sweats, it's worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.

Is viscose made from bamboo naturally antibacterial?

We don't make that claim.

According to the FTC, there is no evidence that rayon or viscose made from processed bamboo automatically retains the bamboo plant's natural antibacterial characteristics.

Is viscose made from bamboo eco-friendly?

Not automatically.

Environmental impact depends on many factors, including where raw materials come from and how the viscose is manufactured and processed. The FTC advises businesses against making broad environmental claims about rayon or viscose made from bamboo without appropriate substantiation.
